How to select best topic for your blog

Posted on 09:46 by Unknown

The most important question after deciding to blog is how to select the best topic for your blog. Are you blogging just for fun or you have plans of making money? There is a difference. If you are blogging for fun, you write for yourself. If you wanna earn money, you write for the audience. You should try to find a topic suited to both the things.

  • Find a topic which you are interested in. If you create a blog which do not attracts you content-wise, how can you think of others to be attracted to it? Write about something you are passionate about. Select a topic which you will love to Google Search.
  • Stick to a particular topic. There is no point writing about 'blue whale' on a recipe blog. Stick to the   topic you started with. Its always better to target a particular audience. If you are maintaining a blog for body building, you hope to see visitors who are interested in it. Trust me, they will be really frustrated if they find a "laptop review" there.
  • Fun or money?. If you are doing it as a hobby, you don't really need to worry about. Just go and write about your favorite athlete, places, or anything. But if you wanna blogging as a source of income, try selecting a topic which not only interests you but also to a large number of people. Just sit and think what you search daily, and try to get an image of what other people search for. Try to select any such topic.
  • Think about the competition. If you start a blog which already has been over-written on the internet, then its less likely for you to get visitors. Those websites or blogs are older than you, containing more posts, indexed in search engines and much more.Competing with them with a brand new blog would be a messy thing. Try to find a topic which is less written about and is interesting. And by the way, even there is a large competition in the area you wanna write, go for it. Who cares man!
  • Can you write about it enough?. It must not happen that you run out of contents to post. Select a topic which you can write about for a long period of time. Starting a blog on "Nokia 5233" model will lead to 'nothing to write situation' after a time. Try writing about 'all Nokia models'. Its just a example!! Contents will be the key.
I have created a lot of blogs. Some as hobby, some professionally to earn some money. I have failed at times. But i am still continuing. Go on with whatever you started. That's the mantra for success.

Benefits of Article Submission site 2013

There are many ways on how to advertise online. A website owner will always find ways on how to seek an advantage from the internet for full promotion of his website. There are several ways on how to do this. One of these methods is submission of articles.

Article submission is an advertising tool that can increase traffic to your website. However, it must be used effectively. The basic things to know are: knowing how it will work for you and finding specific ways on how to make use of its strong points to help you.

Articles are the first things to consider when developing your website. Most website owners hire article writers or sometimes they do the writing themselves. After the articles were written, they will be posted using article directories. There are varieties of software available for this task. Others employ the assistance of article marketing services. Using software is considered to be less expensive than the second one. The procedure is also simple and can be done right away by simply loading all your articles and then submitting them to the desired location.

After the distribution of articles to various directories, you will begin to notice an increase in your traffic. Article submission will create direct links to your web site which will directly have an effect on your page rank. What is also beneficial with this technique is that people who will be clicking on your link will be your direct potential clients. Every potential client that will visit your site will also know that you are very knowledgeable about your product. The articles they read will give them the signal that you know what will the best offers you can give them.

Writing good articles is considered to be also important. The content and appropriateness of each article submitted will greatly influence your promotion. In addition, your articles must be SEO-driven, credible and unique. SEOs come with different strategies. Your articles must conform to their standards and techniques. Keyword based strategies are some to be considered. The best phrases and keywords should be used on your articles. Your articles should vary in content and must sound not too redundant. Search engines use programs that detect articles that have same contents as others previously submitted. It is important to consider having articles that are rich in various styles, meaning, and context. Make sure your articles are rich in knowledge and they contain valuable information that any reader will find useful and beneficial.

Articles should be rich in content but need not be too long. Make sure that the article is directly related to the contents searched for. You can check the content by being the reader yourself by asking if you will be motivated reading the article, will it enlighten you, or will it lead you to have that interest of knowing the product or services rendered.

Article submission can greatly increase your website traffic. There are various article directories. It is important, therefore, to choose the category that will relate most to your website.

Briefly, here are some benefits as a list;

1.Increases Link Popularity: When submitting your articles you are allowed to place a resource box at the end of the article that contains a link back to your site. If you have a high quality article that is read and placed on thousands of sites you automatically get thousands of links pointing back to your site which will increase your position in the organic search results.

2. Better page ranking: With your link popularity, you naturally begin to move up in all of the search engines.

3. More links from Republishing: Drive free targeted traffic to your websites as your quality articles are easily accessible to a large number of publishers and webmasters for reprint on their websites.

4. Attract visitors: Well written articles trigger readers’ interests. If you have an article with valuable content, many people will read it and even spread it. Therefore, you will be able to reach more people and this thing becomes viral in nature. Reaching more people means generating more traffic to your site.

5.Establish as an expert: By publishing quality articles, you earn good reputation, and thereby people will trust your products and business as a whole. This will encourage more readers and potential customers to visit your site which can be converted to business.

Spam and Illegitimate SEO Techniques 2013

Posted on 03:03 by Unknown

Spam and Illegitimate SEO Techniques 2013

Google doesn’t appreciate being fooled, and once it discovers websites using inappropriate optimization techniques it may also punish them by reducing the website’s ranking and even removing the website from its search results altogether. If you’re not sure that what you’re doing is acceptable SEO practice or not, keep in mind the one golden rule: If it’s good for your users, it’s good for Google. Incorporating elements that are for Google’s bot eyes alone usually leads to fishy results. The following is a list of ILLEGITIMATE SEO practices. Here’s what you SHOULD NOT be doing:

Using Redirects to Manipulate Google Page Rank

An illegitimate redirect is a one that occurs automatically when you approach a certain URL. As you click on the link to that site, the page URL (address) will appear for a short while and then automatically redirect you to the main site. This technique is used to increase the number of times the website will appear in search results, as it will appear through different domains.

Google’s crawlers will see a different page than the users, fooling the robot into giving a false page rank.

Not all redirects are considered spam, there are several redirect types that Google accepts and acknowledges, which you can read about in other blog posts here, or through Google’s Webmaster Guidelines.

100% Frames

We’ve already discussed iframes here in this blog. Just like the redirect, and the golden principle of SEO, if what your users see is different than what the Google bot sees, it’s a problem. A 100% frame page is a page covered completely by a frame that consists of different content from the rest of the website. End result – Google sees one thing on which it bases its page ranking and the user sees something entirely different.

Just like the redirect, this enables spammers to index the same site over and over again under different domains. While the different domains may have different content and get ranked as a result of that content, the end user will find himself viewing the same main site.

Hiding Texts and Links

If a text is visible to search engines only it is considered spam. So what does Google consider hidden text?

* Any text written in the same color (or close to) as the web page background.
* Any text situated in an area of the page that has been defined as hidden or invisible using CSS.
* Extremely small fonts that are not legible to internet user.
* Any text that is being hidden behind an image.

While you might find this useful, particularly if you don’t want to overload your web design with texts, it may very well backfire at you. It may get you kicked out of the ranking game altogether, not to mention that clicking ctrl-a in the browser may reveal your texts anyway.

Other Illegitimate Practices to Avoid

Spamming the keywords – using the same keyword over and over without any real content involved.

Cloaking – this is a technological ruse. As you enter the website, the website issues a query inspecting your status. If you are discovered as a crawler you will end up seeing a different page than you would have reached as a regular user.

Doorway Pages – these are pages created solely to optimize for a specific word. The chosen keyword is repeated over and over again on this page, suggesting high relevance to search engines. This doorway page will either include a link to the main homepage or it will include an automatic redirect to the homepage. Either way, this doorway is considered unethical SEO practice.

Excessive Linking between Websites – an exaggerated amount of links between two sites. What’s considered exaggerated? Good question. There isn’t a specific number of links and it depends greatly on the balance of the rest of the content. There is higher risk of getting caught when the two sites use the same IP. In general, triangle linking is much better for SEO purposes. This means that if your website is site A, and you sent a link to site B, site B will link to site C and site C will send the link right back to you – site A. Another unethical practice involves a bombardment of links on a single page or website. Link farms are a particularly deplorable practice.

Selling Links for PR

Lately, websites that have integrated a practice where they sell links to other websites (meaning, website x pays website y to include a link to it) have been losing ground fast. This is done in order to increase the page rank and is also considered deceptive.

So, How Will You Be Discovered?

Search engines use three different methods to discover culprit websites. The first is technological. Search engine bots are programmed to uncover some of the more obvious deception techniques. When the crawler runs in to such cases it will raise a ‘red flag’. This will lead to a temporary PRO penalty (in Google). Usually these penalties are only temporary but in certain cases they may become permanent.

Google and the other search engines also encourage users to report unethical website promotion techniques. You can report other websites through a special web page dedicated to this subject. This is Google’s Spam Report page. You need to sign in to use it though.

Forums are another method of discovering SEO scams. Apparently Google employees read webmaster forums and if they run into something suspicious… they do something about it.

A reciprocal link is a mutual link between two objects, commonly between two websites to ensure mutual traffic. have websites. If Bob's website links to Alice's website, and Alice's website links to Bob's website, the websites are reciprocally linked. Website owners often submit their sites to reciprocal link exchange directories, in order to achieve higher rankings in the search engines. Reciprocal linking between websites is an important part of the search engine optimization process because Google uses link popularity algorithms (defined as the number of links that led to a particular page and the anchor text of the link) to rank websites for relevancy.

Resource Linking

Resource Links are a category of links, which can be either one-way or two-way, usually referenced as "Resources" or "Information" in navbars, but sometimes, especially in the early, less compartmentalized years of the Web, simply called "links". Basically, they are hyperlinks to a website or a specific webpage containing content believed to be beneficial, useful and relevant to visitors of the site establishing the link.

In recent years, resource links have grown in importance because most major search engines have made it plain that -- in Google's words -- "quantity, quality, and relevance of links count towards your rating."

The engines' insistence on resource links being relevant and beneficial developed because many of the methods described elsewhere in this article -- free-for-all linking, link doping, incestuous linking, overlinking, multi-way linking -- and similar schemes were employed solely to "spam" search-engines, i.e. to "fool" the engines' algorithms into awarding the sites employing these unethical devices undeservedly high page ranks and/or return positions.

Despite cautioning site developers (again quoting from Google) to avoid "'free-for-all' links, link popularity schemes, or submitting your site to thousands of search engines (because) these are typically useless exercises that don't affect your ranking in the results of the major search engines -- at least, not in a way you would likely consider to be positive," most major engines have deployed technology designed to "red flag" and potentially penalize sites employing such practices.

Forum signature linking

Forum signature linking is a technique used to build backlinks to a website. This is the process of using forum communities that allow outbound hyperlinks in their member's signature. This can be a fast method to build up inbound links to a website; it can also produce some targeted traffic if the website is relevant to the forum topic. It should be stated that forums using the nofollow attribute will have no actual Search Engine Optimization value.

Blog comments

Leaving a comment on a blog can result in a relevant do-follow link to the individual's website. Most of the time, however, leaving a comment on a blog turns into a no-follow link, which is almost useless in the eyes of search engines, such as Google and Yahoo! Search. On the other hand, most blog comments get clicked on by the readers of the blog if the comment is well-thought-out and pertains to the discussion of the other commenters and the post on the blog.

Promoting Your Site to Increase Traffic

Posted on 02:54 by Unknown

The main purpose of SEO is to make your site visible to search engines, thus leading to higher rankings in search results pages, which in turn brings more traffic to your site. And having more visitors (and above all buyers) is ultimately the goal in sites promotion. For truth's sake, SEO is only one alternative to promote your site and increase traffic – there are many other online and offline ways to do accomplish the goal of getting high traffic and reaching your target audience. We are not going to explore them in this tutorial but just keep in mind that search engines are not the only way to get visitors to your site, although they seem to be a preferable choice and a relatively easy way to do it.

1. Submitting Your Site to Search Directories, forums and special sites

After you have finished optimizing your new site, time comes to submit it to search engines. Generally, with search engines you don't have to do anything special in order to get your site included in their indices – they will come and find you. Well, it cannot be said exactly when they will visit your site for the first time and at what intervals they will visit it later but there is hardly anything that you can to do invite them. Sure, you can go to their Submit a Site pages in submit the URL of your new site but by doing this do not expect that they will hop to you right away. What is more, even if you submit your URL, most search engines reserve the right to judge whether to crawl your site or not. Anyway, here are the URLs for submitting pages in the three major search engines: Google, MSN, and Yahoo.

In addition to search engines, you may also want to have your site included in search directories as well. Although search directories also list sites that are relevant to a given topic, they are different from search engines in several aspects. First, search directories are usually maintained by humans and the sites in them are reviewed for relevancy after they have been submitted. Second, search directories do not use crawlers to get URLs, so you need to go to them and submit your site but once you do this, you can stay there forever and no more efforts on your side are necessary. Some of the most popular search directories are DMOZ and Yahoo! (the directory, not the search engine itself) and here are the URLs of their submissions pages: DMOZ and Yahoo!.

Sometimes posting a link to your site in the right forums or special sites can do miracles in terms of traffic. You need to find the forums and sites that are leaders in the fields of interest to you but generally even a simple search in Google or the other major search engines will retrieve their names. For instance, if you are a hardware freak, type “hardware forums” in the search box and in a second you will have a list of sites that are favorites to other hardware freaks. Then you need to check the sites one by one because some of them might not allow posting links to commercial sites. Posting into forums is more time-consuming than submitting to search engines but it could also be pretty rewarding.

2. Specialized Search Engines

Google, Yahoo!, and MSN are not the only search engines on Earth, nor even the only general-purpose ones. There are many other general-purpose and specialized search engines and some of them can be really helpful for reaching your target audience. You just can't imagine for how many niches specialized search engines exist – from law, to radiostations, to educational one! Some of them are actually huge sites that gather Webwide resources on a particular topic but almost all of them have sections for submitting links to external sites of interest. So, after you find the specialized search engines in your niche, go to their site and submit your URL – this could prove more trafficworthy than striving to get to the top of Google.

3. Paid Ads and Submissions

We have already mentioned some other alternatives to search engines – forums, specialized sites and search engines, search directories – but if you need to make sure that your site will be noticed, you can always resort to paid ads and submissions. Yes, paid listings are a fast and guaranteed way to appear in search results and most of the major search engines accept payment to put your URL in the Paid Links section for keywords of interest to you but you also must have in mind that users generally do not trust paid links as much as they do with the normal ones – in a sense it looks like you are bribing the search engine to place you where you can't get on your own, so think twice about the pros and cons of paying to get listed.

Top SEO Mistakes

Posted on 02:51 by Unknown

Targetting the wrong keywords

This is a mistake many people make and what is worse – even experienced SEO experts make it. People choose keywords that in their mind are descriptive of their website but the average users just may not search them. For instance, if you have a relationship site, you might discover that “relationship guide” does not work for you, even though it has the “relationship” keyword, while “dating advice” works like a charm. Choosing the right keywords can make or break your SEO campaign. Even if you are very resourceful, you can't think on your own of all the great keywords but a good keyword suggestion tool, for instance, the Website Keyword Suggestion tool will help you find keywords that are good for your site.

Ignoring the Title tag

Leaving the title tag empty is also very common. This is one of the most important places to have a keyword, because not only does it help you in optimization but the text in your title tag shows in the search results as your page title.

A Flash website without a html alternative

Flash might be attractive but not to search engines and users. If you really insist that your site is Flash-based and you want search engines to love it, provide an html version. Search engines don't like Flash sites for a reason – a spider can't read Flash content and therefore can't index it.
JavaScript Menus

Using JavaScript for navigation is not bad as long as you understand that search engines do not read JavaScript and build your web pages accordingly. So if you have JavaScript menus you can't do without, you should consider build a sitemap (or putting the links in a noscript tag) so that all your links will be crawlable.

Concentrating too much on meta tags

A lot of people seem to think SEO is about getting your meta keywords and description correct! In fact, meta tags are becoming (if not already) a thing of the past. You can create your meta keywords and descriptions but don't except to rank well only because of this.

Using only Images for Headings

Many people think that an image looks better than text for headings and menus. Yes, an image can make your site look more distinctive but in terms of SEO images for headings and menus are a big mistake because h2, h2, etc. tags and menu links are important SEO items.

Ignoring URLs

Many people underestimate how important a good URL is. Dynamic page names are still very frequent and no keywords in the URL is more a rule than an exception. Yes, it is possible to rank high even without keywords in the URL but all being equal, if you have keywords in the URL (the domain itself, or file names, which are part of the URL), this gives you additional advantage over your competitors. Keywords in URLs are more important for MSN and Yahoo! but even with Google their relative weight is high, so there is no excuse for having keywordless URLs.

Backlink spamming

It is a common delusion that it more backlinks are ALWAYS better and because of this web masters resort to link farms, forum/newgroup spam etc., which ultimately could lead to getting their site banned. In fact, what you need are quality backlinks.

Lack of keywords in the content

Once you focus on your keywords, modify your content and put the keywords wherever it makes sense. It is even better to make them bold or highlight them.

How to Build Backlinks

Posted on 02:50 by Unknown

How to Build Backlinks for seo link popularity

It is out of question that quality backlinks are crucial to SEO success. More, the question is how to get them. While with on-page content optimization it seems easier because everything is up to you to do and decide, with backlinks it looks like you have to rely on others to work for your success. Well, this is partially true because while backlinks are links that start on another site and point to yours, you can discuss with the Web master of the other site details like the anchor text, for example. Yes, it is not the same as administering your own sites – i.e. you do not have total control over backlinks – but still there are many aspects that can be negotiated.

Getting Backlinks the Natural Way

The idea behind including backlinks as part of the page rank algorithm is that if a page is good, people will start linking to it. And the more backlinks a page has, the better. But in practice it is not exactly like this. Or at least you cannot always rely on the fact that your contents is good and people will link to you. Yes, if your content is good and relevant you can get a lot of quality backlinks, including from sites with similar topic as yours (and these are the most valuable kind of backlinks, especially if the anchor text contains your keywords) but what you get without efforts could be less than what you need to successfully promote your site. So, you will have to resort to other ways of acquiring quality backlinks as described next.

Ways to Build Backlinks

Even if plenty of backlinks come to your site the natural way, additional quality backlinks are always welcome and the time you spend building them is not wasted. Among the acceptable ways of building quality backlinks are getting listed in directories, posting in forums, blogs and article directories. The unacceptable ways include inter-linking (linking from one site to another site, which is owned by the same owner or exists mainly for the purpose to be a link farm), linking to spam sites or sites that host any kind of illegal content, purchasing links in bulk, linking to link farms, etc.

The first step in building backlinks is to find the places from which you can get quality backlinks. A valuable assistant in this process is the Backlink Builder tool. When you enter the keywords of your choice, the Backlink Builder tool gives you a list of sites where you can post an article, message, posting, or simply a backlink to your site. After you have the list of potential backlink partners, it is up to you to visit each of the sites and post your content with the backlink to your site in it.

You might wonder why sites as those, listed by the Backlink Builder tool provide such a precious asset as backlinks for free. The answer is simple – they need content for their site. When you post an article, or submit a link to your site, you do not get paid for this. You provide them for free with something they need – content – and in return they also provide you for free with something you need – quality backlinks. It is a free trade, as long as the sites you post your content or links are respected and you don't post fake links or content.

Getting Listed in Directories

If you are serious about your Web presence, getting listed in directories like DMOZ and Yahoo is a must – not only because this is a way to get some quality backlinks for free, but also because this way you are easily noticed by both search engines and potential visitors. Generally inclusion in search directories is free but the drawback is that sometimes you have to wait a couple of months before you get listed in the categories of your choice.

Forums and Article Directories

Generally search engines index forums so posting in forums and blogs is also a way to get quality backlinks with the anchor text you want. If the forum or blog is a respected one, a backlink is valuable. However, in some cases the forum or blog administrator can edit your post, or even delete it if it does not fit into the forum or blog policy. Also, sometimes administrators do not allow links in posts, unless they are relevant ones. In some rare cases (which are more an exception than a rule) the owner of a forum or a blog would have banned search engines from indexing it and in this case posting backlinks there is pointless.

While forum postings can be short and do not require much effort, submitting articles to directories can be more time-consuming because generally articles are longer than posts and need careful thinking while writing them. But it is also worth and it is not so difficult to do.

Content Exchange and Affiliate Programs

Content exchange and affiliate programs are similar to the previous method of getting quality backlinks. For instance, you can offer to interested sites RSS feeds for free. When the other site publishes your RSS feed, you will get a backlink to your site and potentially a lot of visitors, who will come to your site for more details about the headline and the abstract they read on the other site.

Affiliate programs are also good for getting more visitors (and buyers) and for building quality backlinks but they tend to be an expensive way because generally the affiliate commission is in the range of 10 to 30 %. But if you have an affiliate program anyway, why not use it to get some more quality backlinks?

News Announcements and Press Releases

Although this is hardly an everyday way to build backlinks, it is an approach that gives good results, if handled properly. There are many sites (for instance, here is a list of some of them) that publish for free or for a fee news announcements and press releases. A professionally written press release about an important event can bring you many, many visitors and the backlink from a respected site to yours is a good boost to your SEO efforts. The tricky part is that you cannot release press releases if there is nothing newsworthy. That is why we say that news announcements and press releases are not a commodity way to build backlinks.

Backlink Building Practices to Avoid

One of the practices that is to be avoided is link exchange. There are many programs, which offer to barter links. The principle is simple – you put a link to a site, they put a backlink to your site. There are a couple of important things to consider with link exchange programs. First, take care about the ratio between outbound and inbound links. If your outbound links are times your inbound, this is bad. Second (and more important) is the risk that your link exchange partners are link farms. If this is the case, you could even be banned from search engines, so it is too risky to indulge in link exchange programs.

Linking to suspicious places is something else that you must avoid. While it is true that search engines do not punish you if you have backlinks from such places because it is supposed that you have no control over what bad guys link to, if you enter a link exchange program with the so called bad neighbors and you link to them, this can be disastrous to your SEO efforts. For more details about bad neighbors, check the Bad Neighborhood article. Also, beware of getting tons of links in a short period of time because this still looks artificial and suspicious.

15 seo link building Methods, Get The Most Out Of Each Of Them

Posted on 02:54 by Unknown
“Content is king”, that’s what everyone says. And it’s true. However, content is useless if it doesn’t get read. When you’re a beginner and you’re not yet quite so known, the best thing you can do is to combine great content with good link building methods. I’ve compiled a list of 15 different methods of link building, each with a rating in three departments: difficulty to use, time consumed and quality of links that it generates. My advice would be to spend your link building efforts on methods that give High Quality backlinks. Yes, they might be much harder to obtain, but take my advice, between 100 backlinks in forum signatures and 1 backlink from a high profile blog, take the 1 backlink.

I’ve also attached some advices on improving your chances of getting good value for your link building efforts for each of the methods. Please feel free to contribute with advices in the comments if you have anything to add.

1) Forum Posts

  • Difficulty: Low – Read the thread, think of something to say and write it
  • Time Consumed: Low – Seriously, how long does it take to write a reply in a forum
  • Quality: Low – Most forums are seriously handicapped when it comes to SEO. A lot of similar threads, centered around the same core keywords, long and ugly URL’s, very few if any links pointing to threads, most just to the main page, duplicate content issues

Improve your chances:

Post in threads that make it to the front page of Digg or other social media sites.

Look for posts with high linkability value. For example, a thread on DigitalPoint about how a guy got banned has extremely low chances of getting links. A thread on how a guy made $5000 in a month using a new technique has better odds of getting some link love.

Post in sticky threads. They’re just 2 links away from the main page all the time and should get some good link juice.

2) Social Bookmarking

  • Difficulty: Low – now much to it. Just enter url, title, description and some tags.
  • Time Consumed: Low – first time is more time consuming as you make your accounts on the websites. After that it takes less then a minute for each social bookmarking site to save a link.
  • Quality: Low – a lot of them don’t give link juice. But even if they do, the tags that are linked from the front page are the most popular, so plenty of links are entered there all the time. Your link will be slipping to the back pages and moving their position all the time, from the first page of that tag to the 5th, 10th, 20th page and so on.

Improve your chances:

Create your own tag. For example, instead of submitting all your links to the link building tag, submit them to the “link building links” tag. On less used sites, your tag could end up being linked from the front page all the time, if you save enough links in that tag. Your links would be just 1 link away from the front page this way.

Add as many tags as possible to every link you submit, as long as they are relevant to the subject of the article.

3) Social Media

  • Difficulty: High – building up your profile, becoming a top user, getting friends, writing good linkbait. None of these come easy.
  • Time Consumed: High – writing good linkbait is time consuming. Not everyone has the luxury of posting funny or cute photos on their blog.
  • Quality: High – if you get to the front page you get a good number of links usually, depending on your subject. Also, the page where your link is listed can become a PR4-5 on Digg.

Improve your chances:

Build up a good profile on a niche social media site that is suited to your blog’s subject. Less traffic, but more likely to subscribe or be interested in the rest of your articles.

Network with other bloggers, and once in a while, ask them to vote your story, if indeed its front page worthy. A story with a number of initial votes and a few comments is much more likely to be voted by other users of that social media site.

Work your ass off on your linkbait.

4) Guest Posts

  • Difficulty: Medium – writing a post for a blog with the same subject as yours should be easy to you.
  • Time Consumed: Medium – it needs to be good quality. You’re trying to get some of their readers to subscribe to your blog. Don’t waste this opportunity by writing a low key article.
  • Quality: High – if you pick the blog right, and you write a good article, it should bring you new subscribers, a link from a blog in the same niche as you and maybe links from other bloggers in the same niche.

Improve your chances:

Write linkbait in your guest posts. Some say that your best content should stay on your blog. I disagree. If you have 30 subscribers and you write a guest post for someone with 10,000 subscribers, it can bring you couple of hundred new subscribers if you play your cards right.

Prepare your blog for the incoming visitors. Before your guest post goes up, make sure that at least your last 2-3 articles are of great quality. Even better, make them part of a series, and if you know what the new visitors are interested in, then they should be much more inclined to subscribe in order to follow that series.

5) Interviews

  • Difficulty: Medium – approach a few bloggers in your niche that have a fair number of subscribers. Try and get interviews with people from new companies that generate a lot of hype. DealDotCom and BlogRush, a lot of people interested in them these days. Did anyone try to get an interview with some juicy details from people working for these two?
  • Time Consumed: Medium – study the subject, see what people are saying about them, what kind of questions they have. Make a list of questions and do a good quality interview. Be unique, don’t ask the same questions they’ve been asked before 100 times (study the previous interviews they gave).
  • Quality: High – Links from high profile blogs in your niche and maybe links from their readers.

Improve your chances:

Try and secure interviews with bloggers/people that people have talked about lately and that they might be curious about. If you can bring some extra details or another point of view on the subject it can be good linkbait

Don’t waste the opportunity. Think of what people might be interested in knowing about that guy, try to get some good tips from him, see what others failed to ask him before you. Don’t ask just generic questions.

6) Linkbait

  • Difficulty: High – it might come easy to SEOmoz or Aaron Wall, but for most people it will take a few tries before they get
  • it right. When you’re small and not a lot of people follow your blog it’s not that easy to get the linkbait out there. Make it appealing to others and work hard on promoting it.
  • Time Consumed: High – again, as a small blogger you have to put a lot of effort and time in your linkbait. Then comes the promotion part.
  • Quality: High – a lot of links from blogs writing on the same subject as you. Links from old and high authority domains if you get picked up by the media.

Improve your chances:

Think outside the box. Writing yet another list of link building methods doesn’t do much good anymore. Put a twist on it. Like this article does :P

Let other people know about it. Don’t contact high profile bloggers with each article you write. Once or twice a month, if you write a high quality article, you can send them a mail if they’re writing about the same thing. Contact Daniel from Daily Blog Tips or Kevin from Blogging Tips if you got a blogging tip (both great guys), or contact John Chow if you got a money making article.

7) Linking Out

  • Difficulty: Medium – the difficult part is not using a link to others in your articles, but actually making it part of a very good article when linking to high profile bloggers.
  • Time Consumed: Low – find a way to link out to other bloggers with every good article you write. If you’re doing research for an article, link to those that served as inspiration.
  • Quality: High – again, if they like your content and write about it, links from high profile bloggers in your niche.

Improve your chances:

Link to articles or about pages instead of the index. If they have to approve the trackback then they will probably come and see if your blog is trackback worthy. They usually have plenty of links to the index page and deep links are always good.

If you see an article that the blogger put a lot of effort into, but doesn’t get much reaction from his readers, link to it and recommend it if its good. He will probably appreciate more the attention on an article like that, then if you link together with 100 other people to a more popular one.

8) Link Exchanges

  • Difficulty: Medium – finding people that are wiling to do link exchanges in the same niche as you might be difficult for some, especially if you want good links
  • Time Consumed: Medium – it takes time to write all those emails, even if you have a template for it and just change the name. It doesn’t hurt to put a little effort in creating that email.
  • Quality: Medium – they are links from the same niche, but they’re sitewide blogroll links.

Improve your chances:

Link to them before you send the email. Let them know that you’ve already put them in your blogroll and if they like your blog they can do the same. Don’t be upset if they don’t want to exchange links. I’m not too crazy after blogroll link exchanges for example. They can become quite a long list of links on each of your pages, diluting the amount of link juice that you can give.

Don’t do link exchanges with everyone. Pick some bloggers with authority in your niche, that you know they’ll be there in the long run. Network a bit before you ask something like that and know when to ask. For example, you can network with Darren Rowse all you want, I still don’t think he’ll exchange links with you.

Offer some value with that link exchange. Gain some authority before you start sending emails to people asking for link exchanges.

9) Directory Submission

  • Difficulty: Low – completing forms is not exactly rocket science
  • Time Consumed: Low – takes a few minutes for each submission
  • Quality: Low – pages and pages full of links. If they’re general directories then you’ve got links from cars to how to make soap sites. Before supplemental results were removed I used to look at directories and almost all their pages were marked as supplemental. Not much value there.

Improve your chances:

Some directories still provide some value. Especially those that Google thinks that they’re actually taking care of who they let in, and they’re not in it just for the money. Niche directories might also bring some value.

10) Free Templates or Themes

  • Difficulty: High – you actually have to know how to make one and have a good eye at design
  • Time Consumed: High – it can take anywhere from a few hours to one week. Depends how much experience you have and how good the theme is.
  • Quality: Low/Medium – you do get some good links from articles announcing your theme, but most are footer links from bloggers with lower authority. The likes of John Chow, Shoemoney, Darren Rowse have custom themes. Authority bloggers that don’t have custom themes usually don’t change what they have for another free theme. They either go custom at some point, or they stay with what works for them right now. So your theme and your footer links will largely come from new blogs, that might take some time to get authority. Still, a very good theme can get a huge number of backlinks and it’s not that unusual to see PR5-6 blogs that got their PR from themes they released.

Improve your chances:

Study successful themes, make yours Adsense ready, SEO them. Talk with friends and other bloggers and see what they like to see in a theme, ask for feedback as you develop it.

Do it the Nate Whitehill way. One custom theme for John Chow and one redesign for Shoemoney got him $13,000 worth of orders. If he had made a free theme with similar layout as the one used by John Chow, he would’ve gotten a huge number of backlinks from those that try to be like John.

11) Create a WordPress Plugin

  • Difficulty: High – again, you have to know how to code, more so then with themes
  • Time Consumed: High – from a few hours to days, depends on how complex it is
  • Quality: Medium/High – if you make something that people need, it can bring you a ton of good quality links

Improve your chances:

See what other bloggers need. They might need an Adsense Plugin, a DoFollow plugin, A SEO plugin or simply a Buy me a beer plugin. If you manage to do something new that most people would embrace,
that plugin page will get linked to quite a lot.

Promote it. Plugin directories, blogs that announce new plugins and themes, blogs that are giving blogging tips. Contact those people and tell them what you’ve created.

12) Hold a Contest

  • Difficulty: Low – make the announcement, promote the contest, give away the prizes
  • Time Consumed: Low/Medium – it really depends on how successful it is. 200 entries would be quite a hand full, 5 of them not that much.
  • Quality: Depends – if you give $4000 worth of prizes away, then you might get the big bloggers as well. If you’re giving $5-$20 or just a few links and you’re not high PR, then the quality of links might be lower.

Improve your chances:

Let people know what value they’re getting if you’re not giving away money. Put banners up in your blog if you’re giving away free advertising space (like I did in my contest – check it out). Don’t ask too much as a condition to enter the contest. Unless you’re giving away hundreds of dollars worth of prizes, I wouldn’t ask for a full review or post dedicated just to your blog.

13) Create mini-blogs and link to your main blog

  • Difficulty: Low – writing shorter articles on the same topic as your main blog should be easy
  • Time Consumed: High – you do have to write a number of articles and maybe do some link building for it
  • Quality: Low – links from blogs in the same niche, but without much authority. The time spent writing articles for mini-blogs can be spent better if you use it to write pillar content for the main blog.

Improve your chances:

If you do decide to make mini blogs to support the main one, at least don’t use your hosting account because it would be the same IP class. Use Blogspot, Wordpress.com and other free blogging hosts. Create a mini blog on each one and write at least a few articles with links to your own blog in them.

One way of doing it is for linkbait that doesn’t belong on your main blog. Maybe you have an idea for a funny piece that wouldn’t be appreciated by your readers, but is still somehow related to your subject. Use a mini-blog and try to get it on Digg to gather some links.

14) Buying links

  • Difficulty: Low – not hard, you just need money and to know what you need
  • Time Consumed: Medium – contacting other sites/bloggers, looking for good pages
  • Quality: High – if you can afford to pay for them

Improve your chances:

Don’t go the Text Link Ads route. Everyone can see the blogs that are selling links there.

Instead, use Google and search for articles centered around your keywords. Look for the backlinks and see who linked to it, see what PR it has, how far away it is from the main page. Then contact the blogger/site owner and offer him money to transform that keyword from his article into a link to your blog. It might get expensive, but if you can manage to find articles about your keywords that were linked a lot, then getting a link there would be much better then getting a side-wide blogroll link.

15) Paid Reviews

  • Difficulty: Low – others write about you, not much effort there
  • Time Consumed: Medium – do it right. Study the blogger and his past paid reviews to see how he writes them.
  • Quality: High – articles dedicated just to your blogs, with your chosen keywords in them

Improve your chances:

Don’t just pick a blog and ask for a paid review. Study other paid reviews done by the blogger, see what he usually didn’t like and what he did. If that blogger doesn’t like Adsense and says it in every post (Tyler :P ) then take the ads out before you order that review. The blogger’s obligation is to tell his readers his real opinion, your duty is to get as much bang for the buck as possible. I’m a subscriber of Tyler’s blog for quite some time now, and it never ceases to amaze me that people still pay him for reviews without taking the Adsense out first. Adapt your blog to what that particular blogger that you’re paying likes to see. At least when it comes to ads or minor elements of design.

Also, make sure you’ve got some good posts up when he comes and after he gives his review. Again, make sure you get the most out of your money if you want to pay for a review.
